Ashness Bridge

My first memories of Ashness Bridge go back to my childhood as a boy scout, spending weekends at the scout hut, situated just above the bridge. The other memory of that time, is of Vivien Fisher opening the gate for motorists, 200 yards below the bridge. Today, it is one of the most photographed and painted packhorse bridges in the Lake District. The view north from the bridge, taking in Derwentwater, Keswick and the Skiddaw massif is a classic landscape scene and appears on everything from jigsaw puzzles to boxes of chocolates.

A walk or run from Keswick via the lakeshore footpath, underneath Falcon Crag to Ashness and back via the summit of Walla Crag, is to be recommended.
