Broad Stand

The most direct route between Scafell Pike and Scafell. This minor rock climb is situated on the eastern side of the Mickledore ridge and is not for the faint-hearted. It is difficult to find coming from Scafell to the Pike, as the map is of little use. In wet weather it is probably best avoided. It is described by Wainwright ‘as the greatest single obstacle confronting walkers on the hills of Lakeland’. The closely situated mountain rescue box is of little comfort. Broad Stand deserves the greatest respect.

When descending, you hang from the first block and drop onto the second, which is quite precarious as it drops away from you.
