Castle Crag, ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’

The ‘Countryfile Calendar 2022 (November)’ was the catalyst for this image. The view down the lake from Friar's Crag to the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’ is one I have enjoyed all my life. As views go I don’t think it can be beaten. I have climbed Castle Crag many times as part of our extended lake circuit. In recent years I have chosen it as my Remembrance Day option when Gable felt too far. It is still a messy climb up through the old quarry workings but in general, nature has claimed the fell back and it is now covered by a canopy of trees. The summit, with its war memorial to the men of Borrowdale, set in the rock, offers a fine view back down Derwentwater with Skiddaw behind.
