Catstycam

Day 21 of my Wainwright Challenge found me on the bus to Glenridding to climb Birkhouse Moor, Catstycam, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywagon Pike, White Side and Raise, before descending via Sticks Pass to Stannah.

The view of Catstycam from Birkhouse Moor is the perfect triangular mountain form. The three syllable name, Catstycam, has always intrigued me. ‘Ridge with wild cat’s path’ is one translation of the Old Norse ‘katts stigr kambr’ or the Old English ‘catt stig camb’.

Red Tarn at the foot of Catstycam, nestling between Swirral Edge and Striding Edge is referenced in the image.
