Esk Hause Shelter

Esk Hause is the highest and best known of the foot passes. It is a crossroads to the high fells and links Eskdale to Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. It is a checkpoint on a number of fell races and was crossed on the Four Peaks Mountain Marathon.

My image is a depiction of the shelter, situated 300 metres lower than the true Esk Hause. The shelter has served me well over the years. The last time was in 2016, a walk from Wrynose Pass to Seathwaite, picking up Wainwrights in poor weather, and it served as a late lunch stop.

The image brought back memories of the work of Richard Paul Lohse, a Swiss graphic designer, who I admired. But, more importantly I would like to dedicate the image to my brother, Malcolm, who passed away in 2018. He supported me on all my marathon runs and I miss him greatly.
