Four Peaks

The Rambler's Association Four Three Thousand Peaks Mountain Marathon. The inaugural event was held in 1965. The first man home was Stan Bradshaw in a time of 11 hours 11 minutes. In 1970 Joss Naylor set a new record of 8 hours 24 minutes. In 1976 Pete Walkington equalled it. In 1979 Billy Bland set a new record of 7 hours 35 minutes. In 1985, unbelievably I came home in 8 hours 24 minutes.

The event started from Keswick at 2am on the third Saturday in June. Forty-five miles and 12,000 feet of climbing. Skiddaw, Scafell, Scafell Pike, High Raise (for good measure), Helvellyn and Keswick. The event was thought to be a good test for potential Bob Graham Round contenders. If you could complete the 'Four Peaks' in under 12 hours you had a chance.

It was probably one of my best ever runs.
