Great Mell Fell

A walk from Matterdale End taking in Gowbarrow Fell, Little Mell Fell and Great Mell Fell was Day 10 of my Wainwright Challenge. Even on a grey damp day I recorded it as a pleasant circuit. Great Mell Fell is prominent from the Keswick to Penrith road. Wainwright described it as an ‘inverted pudding-basin’. It was out of bounds for years, as the military staked a claim. I have been up it previously, but not often.
