High Rigg, St John's in the Vale

There can be no better introduction to fellwalking than a circuit of High Rigg from St John’s in the Vale church. Going down the east side of the valley and coming back along the undulating ridge to the summit, is my preference. The views from the summit are expansive, Blencathra standing out particularly well. In the near ground is Tewet Tarn, which in my school days was very popular with local ice skaters. Being relatively high, it froze over quite early.

I can’t wait for spring when the churchyard will be awash with daffodils and I can introduce my grandchildren to the delights of this enchanting walk.
