Newlands Church

One of my favourite places in the Lake District. A nicely proportioned building in a beautiful location. I like its simplicity. The bench to the left of the entrance is the ideal place for morning coffee on a walk round the Newlands Valley. I have always been aware of the church, but in my early years I was always in a hurry to get to the fells. It is synonymous with the Bob Graham Round. You are either making for your first peak or you have just completed your last. I now take a bit more time to enjoy its serenity, to be in the moment, and reflect on previous excursions.

The red lozenge is a reference to the principle stained glass window, which I have always admired. It’s April, the sun is shining and the churchyard is filled with daffodils.
