Skiddaw Sheepfolds – yan, tyan, tethera, methera, pimp, sethera

A special feature, unique to this area, are the dry stone circular sheepfolds. Six in total, three of which are still in very good condition. The one 800 metres south west of Skiddaw House, near Salehow Beck, is a fine example.

I have visited and admired them many times over the years, sculpture of the highest order! They are a link with the past and I am always reminded of the Celtic dialect connected with the counting of sheep.

The colours in the image relate to the landscape and the marking of sheep for identification.
