Souther Fell

Day 5 of my Wainwright Challenge saw me at Mungrisdale to do the three fells, Souther Fell, Bannerdale Crags and Bowscale. I was joined by Kathy. It is easy ground, and a walk she enjoys. We opted for a clockwise circuit and were rewarded with seeing two red squirrels as we left Mungrisdale.

The Wainwright books are wonderful background reading for any walk (my Desert Island Discs book would be a set of the 'Pictorial Guides'). A simple fell like Souther Fell is virtually encircled by the intriguingly named Glenderamackin beck.

It also has an amazing tale to tell relating to the evening of midsummer day 1745. Soldiers and horsemen had been seen marching across the top of ‘Soutra Fell’, referred to as the ‘The Spectral Army of Soutra Fell’.
