The Charcoal Burners

My favourite stanza from the poem ‘The Charcoal Burners’ by Irvine Hunt. 250 years ago charcoal burning was a major industry in the southern lakes. An acre of woodland had to be harvested to make enough charcoal to produce a ton of iron. Trees were not felled, but coppiced to within inches off the ground which encouraged new shoots.
