The Lonscale Shepherds

Keswick people have an inborn affection for Skiddaw, and why wouldn’t they. It is the perfect backdrop to the town. I have climbed Skiddaw more than any other mountain. The time-honoured route is via the side of Latrigg, Gale Road, Jenkin Hill. I often include Lonscale and Skiddaw Little Man on the ascent and return via Skiddaw House and the Glenderaterra path.

At the foot of Jenkin Hill there is a monument to the Lonscale Shepherds. It is inscribed with an epitaph which I have included in the image. The sheep they cared for are an intrinsic part of the landscape and have been a major influence on how it looks today.
